14 Days Uganda Safari – Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer From Entebbe Or Kampala To Murchison Falls National Park. En-Route Visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

After your early morning breakfast at 6:30 am, you’ll be picked up by our professional driver guide and transfer to Murchison Falls National Park. This scenic drive takes about 5-6 hours covering 311km.

You’ll have an en-route stop in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary- for Rhino tracking on foot experience. This great thrilling encounter will offer you an opportunity of having a close encounter with the only 32- remaining wild Rhinos in Uganda on foot in their natural habitat!

After this unique experience, you’ll go for lunch at Kabalega Dinner nearby and after, continue the drive to Murchison Falls NP- Uganda’s biggest park bisected by the legendary Bile Rive.

You should expect to encounter several animals such as Elephants, Hippos, Buffalos Lions, Leopards, Crocs, Rothschild’s Giraffe, and various antelopes. Also, you’ll get a chance to spot some of the 451 bird species such as the Shoebill and the Red-throated Bee-eaters, and Kingfishers.

Day 2: Do A Morning Game Drive In Murchison Park & An Afternoon Nile Boat Cruise To The Bottom Of The Falls

After having your early breakfast around 6:30 am, you’ll meet your driver guide and transfer to the rolling plains of the Buligi game area. In this area, travelers can spot over 80% of animals in Murchison Falls NP.

On this picturesque 160km long game drive, you’ll have an opportunity of encountering amazing big game animals such as:

  • Buffaloes
  • Lions
  • Elephants
  • Leopards
  • Hippos
  • Giraffes and
  • Several antelope species such as Uganda kobs, Bush-bucks, Jackson’s Hartebeests Water-bucks, etc.

Furthermore, while on the 3-4 hours game drive you can encounter amazing birds such as the Secretary bird, and the Abyssinian Ground Horn-bill.

You’ll drive back to your lodge, have lunch and relax a bit as you get ready for your next Nile boat cruise at 2 pm.

In the afternoon, your driver guide will transfer you to a Nile boat cruise to the bottom of the giant Murchison Falls– the world’s strongest waterfall emitting 300cm3/s of water.

During the cruise, you’ll spot Hippos amazingly submerged in water and Nile Crocodiles basking in the sun as well Elephants, Buffaloes, and numerous antelopes are common residents along river banks.

Among birds commonly spotted include Red-throated Bee-eaters along Nyamusika cliff, African fish Eagles, and colorful Kingfishers.

The climax of this cruise is a dock on a small bay that is just a few meters from the massive falls. From here, you’ll have breathtaking views of the great Murchison Falls.

After a leisurely breakfast at around 9 am, you’ll transfer to have a 4-5 hours Nile Lake Albert delta boat cruise.

This thrilling Nile delta boat cruise will give you a chance of exploring the Nile Lake Albert delta area- the best area to spot the rare Shoe-bill in Africa. Also, during this 20km picturesque cruise in the Nile delta area, you’ll encounter thousands of water birds counting:

  • Saddle-billed stocks
  • Papyrus Gonoleks
  • Grey-crowned Cranes
  • Great Egrets
  • Yellow-billed Stork

Day 4: Drive To The Top Of Murchison Falls And Transfer To Kibale National Park

You’ll have a relaxed breakfast around 8:30 am and drive to the top of the falls to explore Murchison falls from another pleasing perspective.

From here, you’ll witness the dramatic scenery as the Legendary Nile River (50m wide) fights to pass through an 8m narrow gorge before falling 45m along a cliff to form a Devil’s Cauldron.

From here, you’ll undertake a 6-7 hours drive to Kibale National Park– the Primate Capital of the World! This drive takes you through the beautiful countryside getting amazing views of the great Albertine Rift Valley.

You’ll reach Fort Portal- the cleanest city in Uganda during lunchtime, get lunch, and after, continue with your drive to Kibale park- the best area for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda.

Kibale is famous for its highest concentration of primates in Africa counting over 1,500 chimp population. Other common primates in Kibale Forest include:

Day 5: Morning Chimpanzee Trekking In Kibale And Afternoon Bigodi Village Walk

You ‘have an early breakfast at 6:30 am from your lodge and then transfer for a chimpanzee trekking briefing at 8 am at Kibale park headquarters.

During the briefing, an expert park ranger guide will share with you the dos and don’ts while undertaking chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park.

After, you’ll embark on a 2-5 hours hike in the rain-forest in search of the amazing man’s closest genetic relatives- sharing over 98-99% DNA of man.

On encountering them, you’ll spend one magical hour watching them:

  • Swinging in trees,
  • Breastfeeding if any
  • Grooming each other
  • Kissing and,
  • Roaming the ground, etc.

You’re free to take as many photos as you wish though, flash-less cameras should be used.

After this memorable experience with chimps “man’s cousins” you’ll trek back to park headquarters for a picnic lunch.

In the afternoon, you’ll have an amazing village walk in the Bigodi community. This will offer you an opportunity to spend time with the local people as you get to know about their unique ways of life.

Day 6: Undertake A Morning Game Drive, Afternoon Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise & Evening Game Drive Along The Channel Track In Queen Elizabeth Park

From your lodge, you’ll have a leisurely breakfast and after, undertake a 2-3 hours drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park- Uganda’s most diverse national park. This park holds over 600 bird species and over 95 animal species counting 4 of the African safari Big five animals except for Rhinos.

During the drive, you’ll have great views of crater lakes plus rolling stunning hills. You’ll have a stop in Kasese town which is on the foothills of Rwenzori Mountains (5109m high) to explore the great Ruboni Community.

While in this area, you’ll discover the rich and unique cultural customs and traditions of the Bakonzo people who have settled on the Rwenzori foothills for centuries.

This cultural encounter will allow you to get to know about the unique lifestyles of Bakonzo, and the crops they grow, as well as get entertained by their dramatic music, dance, and drama.

After this thrilling cultural experience, you’ll drive to Queen Elizabeth NP, check in at your lodge, and have lunch.

You’ll have an early breakfast at around 6:30 am and transfer to the beautiful rolling plains of the Kasenyi sector so that you begin your day with early grazers. Lucky travelers can spot predators such as Hyenas or Lions hunting.

On this 3-4 hours game drive, you should look out for:

  • Cape Buffaloes,
  • Elephants,
  • Leopards,
  • Spotted Hyenas,
  • Warthogs
  • Hippos and,
  • Numerous antelope species such as Bush-bucks, Uganda kobs, Water-bucks, and Oribis.

After this lovely cruise, you’ll drive back to your lodge for some rest, and have lunch as you set yourself up for the Kazinga channel boat cruise at 2 pm.

Kazinga channel is an attractive 32km long natural channel connecting Lake George to Lake Edward. This area holds the highest concentration of Hippos in the world.

During a thrilling boat cruise on Kazinga channel, you’ll have a remarkable close encounter with wildlife counting over 100s of Hippos submerged in water and countless Crocodiles basking on shores.

Elephants and Buffaloes are commonly encountered amazingly bathing along the channel banks. Also, various antelope species and many birds such as Pelicans, Saddle-billed Storks, and Kingfishers are barely missed.

After this relaxing boat cruise, you’ll enjoy a short game drive along the channel track as you drive back to your lodge to relax, have dinner as well as and overnight.

Day 8: Transfer To Bwindi. Have An En-Route Game Drive In Ishasha In Search Of Tree-Climbing Lions

You’ll take a relaxed breakfast at 8 am from your lodge and after transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – the best site for gorilla trekking in Uganda.

This 160km (4-7 hours drive) takes you via the Ishasha sector to spot tree climbing Lions. You’ll encounter them amazingly resting up in big fig tree branches.

It’s assumed that Lions in Ishasha climb trees to escape the biting insects and much heat on the ground.

After this great experience, you’ll continue the drive to Bwindi- a UNESCO world heritage holding over 459 Mountain gorillas, 350 bird species including over 19 Albertine endemic bird species, and over 120 mammal species.

Upon arrival in the early evening, you’ll check in at your lodge, have some rest, dinner, as well as overnight.

Day 9: Do Mountain Gorilla Trekking In Bwindi Park And Transfer To Lake Bunyonyi To Relax

You’ll have an early breakfast at around 6:30 am and after transfer to Bwindi park head quartets for gorilla trekking briefing at 8 am.

After the briefing, you’ll embark on a trail into the misty Bwindi forest to encounter the gentle giants. Mountain Gorillas are believed to share about 98% of man’s DNA therefore, they’re also man’s close genetic relatives just like Chimpanzees.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi takes about 2-8 hours depending on the movement of these shy giants. On the hiking trail, you’re more likely to spot the great biodiversity of Bwindi such as the beautiful primates, butterflies, and forest birds of Uganda.

On encountering the shy giants, you’ll enjoy them feeding, grooming, and breastfeeding and also stare at the great sheer size of the Silver-back gorilla.

You’re free to take as many photos as possible however, you should use a flash-less camera.

After the encounter, you’ll move back to the briefing point and get a gorilla trekking certificate as well as enjoy your parked lunch. Next, you’ll transfer to and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi- Uganda’s most magnificent lake dotted with over charming 29 islands.

You’ll wake up and have a leisurely breakfast at 9 am and after, undertake a canoe ride to explore some of the amazing historical islands of Lake Bunyonyi counting:

The horrible Akampene (Punishment) Island: This Island is famously known for its horrible history! It’s a place where unmarried pregnant girls could be brought by their parents to die of hunger or drown while trying to escape.

However, lucky ones could survive after being stolen by men who couldn’t be able to be dowry.

Such a dreadful act was done to create fear in others from doing such a shameful action to the family! This ancient act got abandoned after the coming of Christianity.

Alternatively, you can choose to have a picturesque hike to one of the scenic hills around or enjoy zip-lining across the serene waters of Lake Bunyonyi.  Visitors can also choose to swim or have a community walk.

Day 11: Transfer To Lake Mburo National Park. Have An En-Route Stop At Igongo Cultural Center For A Traditional Lunch & Enjoy An Evening Game Drive Upon Arrival

You’ll wake up and enjoy a leisurely breakfast at around 9 am and after, embark on a (4-hour) drive to Lake Mburo National Park.

You’ll drive along one of the scenic roads in Uganda. It will pass you through a picturesque landscape of stunning Savannah landscapes, banana plantations, beautiful villages, and herds of amazing long-horned Ankole cattle.

During the drive, you’ll make a stop at Igongo Cultural Center and Museum for a delicious traditional lunch. Upon finishing lunch, you’ll continue the drive to check in at your lodge in Lake Mburo NP for a rest.

After some relaxation, you’ll take a 2 hours game drive in the late afternoon. During this drive, expect to spot

Day 12: Do A Morning Game Walk Safari And Transfer To Jinja- The Source Of The Nile River For Relaxation

You’ll wake up early for breakfast at 6:30 am and after, transfer to a 2 hours lovely guided walk in Mburo park to have a great feel with nature on foot.

During this memorable hike, you’ll spot amazing animals in Mburo National Park such as the beautiful Elands, Topis, Impalas, Zebras, Buffaloes, Water-bucks, Bush-bucks, and numerous acacia birds.

Please note that elephants and Lions have not been spotted in Mburo park in the past few decades.

You’ll retreat from this memorable Uganda safari adventure and embark on a 7-8 hours drive to Jinja. Jinja is dubbed the “Adventure Capital of Africa” and holds the source of the fabled Nile River.

During this drive, you’ll have an en-route stop at the Kayabwe Uganda Equator monument for amazing photo shoots while posing in the center of the earth. You can also buy a souvenir from wonderful craft shops around.

After a great moment at the Equator, you’ll continue your drive to Jinja for relaxation as well enjoying an overnight at Lemala Wild waters lodge.

This lodge is amazingly set on a beautiful island hidden in a primeval forest within the wonderful wild water of the River Nile.

Lemala Wild-waters lodge is a water-sport paradise for white rafting, kayaking, jet boating, and fishing. You can also swim in a gorgeous pool made of natural rock.

Day 13: Full-Day Relaxation At The Resort In The Middle Of The Nile River. Optional Enjoying White-Water Rafting In The Nile River

Around 9 am, you’ll wake up, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, and then spend the rest of the day relaxing in your lovely, environmentally friendly suite with a private balcony and a lush garden.

Depending on your flight schedule, you can choose to undertake 5 hour Kampala city tour. Kampala is the Capital city of Uganda covering over 21 hills with a population of over 3.6m people where Baganda dominates the most.

During this tour, you’ll visit the wonderful local markets in Kampala, the amazing taxi park, Gadaffi Mosque, Uganda National Museum as well Kasubi tombs- a UNESCO world heritage site, among others.
