Day 1: Travel From Kampala To Fort Portal Area, Visit Amabere Caves, Hike Fort Portal Crater Lake Field & Drive To Kibale Forest National Park

Wake up early and enjoy your breakfast after you embark on a 300km (5-6 hours drive) to Fort Portal town.

This lovely drive takes you through the impressive countryside of Uganda such as the eye-catching inselbergs in Mubende. You’ll drive through vibrant towns such as Mpigi, Mityana, Mubende, and Kyenjojo.

On arrival in Fort Portal- (a very picturesque town) around lunchtime, we shall settle for lunch in a premium restaurant.

Following lunch, transfer to the Amabeere cave area– a very rich historical site named after the live stalactite formation resembling the twin breasts of a woman.

Locally, these breast-like features are believed to be Amabeere ga Nyinamwiru “Breast of Nyinamwiru”.

On your visit to this area, you’ll get to know about the fascinating legend having it that these breast-like features in the caves belonged to Nyinamwiru– a daughter of King Bukuku.

Bukuku was a king of Batembuzi (demi-gods) around the 14 century.

Nyinamwiru is said to have been a very beautiful girl that every man could fall for!

However, when her father King Bukuku got weary of getting marital requests of her daughter from unsuitable suitors, he decided to cut off his daughter’s breasts to lessen her beauty.

More Information:

Her breasts were thrown in these caves. Amazingly, up-to-date, locals believe that the white substance dripping from these stalactites are the breasts of Nyinamwiru!

From these wonderful caves, you’ll embark on a picturesque hike to Fort Portal Crater Lake Field.

You’ll enjoy traversing the fairly challenging slopes of Kyeganywa hill which is surrounded by numerous impressive crater hollows and crater lakes. The area offers dazzling views of Uganda!

On clear days, visitors can enjoy great views of the beautiful snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Day 2: Do A Morning Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale & Undertake A Scenic Walk in Bigodi Wetland

You’ll enjoy an early breakfast around 6:30 am from your lodge and after transfer to Kibale park headquarters for a briefing about this amazing lifetime adventure at 8 am.

During the briefing, a professional park ranger will explain to you all the information concerning this might rain forest of Kibale. Also, he will share with you the dos and don’ts of the chimpanzee trekking experience.

On finishing briefing, you’ll embark into the jungle (in the company of park rangers) in search of the Chimpanzees. The trek can take about 2-5 hours depending on the movement of the chimps.

Research proves that chimps share about 98-99% of DNA similar to that of man and therefore, they are considered close genetic relatives of man.

Day 3: Cycling Adventure in Mpanga Tea Estate (Optional) & Transferring Back To Kampala, Making An En-Route Visit To Nakayima Tree

You’ll wake up for a leisurely breakfast around 8 am and after transfer to Kampala.  However, you can opt to first enjoy an amazing cycling tour en route in the lush Mpanga Tea Estate.

During this scenic ride, you’ll explore the lush and picturesque undulating landscape of this tea plantation on a mountain bike in the company of the local guide.

After, retire and embark on your drive making another stop in Mubende town to visit the Nakayima tree– a great historical tree, best known for Bachwezi (demi-gods) and a sacrificial site of Buganda.

According to scientists, this tree is estimated to be between 500-1000 years old. The most fascinating feature of this unusual tree is its huge buttress roots around its base that have created a dozen of cavernous hollows.

Each hollow is dedicated to a particular spirit- according to locals. The most prominent spirit is Nakayima (fertility and various illnesses) and Ndahura (smallpox).

Other spirits around (each found in a buttressed root room) include Nabuzana (marriage), Walumbe (death and diseases) Mukasa (lakes and rivers), and Bamweyana (madness).

The Nakayima tree is an active shrine that is commonly visited by Bachwezi cultists all over Uganda and Bunyoro to offer sacrifices to relevant spirits. Usually, cows and goats are roasted in this cultural site in honor of these spirits.
